Senators serve six-year terms, with federal elections occurring every two years. To ensure continuity, the Senate is divided into three groups, or “classes,” comprising 33, 33, and 34 senators (Class I, Class II, and Class III, respectively). This staggered system allows approximately one-third of the Senate to face re-election during each cycle. Since every state has two senators, each state is represented by two of the three classes, leaving one class unrepresented. In Arizona’s case, the state does not have a Class II senator.
